Hey everyone, how was your New Years? I hope everybody had a nice vacation, and haven't forgotten about fencing! I have decided that we should meet at least twice in February, and I am putting up some dates, and see if you are available. We will meet on a day when all of us, or most of us, are ready to attend, so it will be worth it. Try to come to all of the vacation practices, and we have brand new equipments!

What is fencing?
Fencing is not the thing that is between your yard and your neighbor’s yard. No, this type of fencing is an organized sport involving the use of the sword—épée, foil, or sabre—for attack and defense according to set movements and rules. Although the use of swords dates to prehistoric times and swordplay to ancient civilizations, the organized sport of fencing began only at the end of the 19th century. Fencing has been an Olympic sport since 1896, when the modern Olympic Games was revived. Our club uses the foil as our only weapon.

Is fencing dangerous?
Absolutely Not! If the fencer wears the appropriate equipment, fencing is absolutely safe! For a fencer, these following equipments are necessary at all times. A jacket, glove, plastron (underarm protectors), mask, breast protectors (for women), and breeches (fencing pants).

How much will it cost?
The average fencer spends over $160 on basic equipments. Because our club has a special deal with the Fencing Post ®, we can manage to get our set at $100. This includes a jacket, mask, glove, and a weapon. All you need to pay is $20 per semester, and we will loan you a set.

Does the fencing club compete?
You bet! Our club is a member of the Southern California Scholastic Fencing League, and we try to participate in local competitions whenever we can. Please check the club’s schedule. To compete, you would need to be a member of the United States Fencing Association. There is a yearly membership that costs $50. Applications are available online, or we can provide you with a paper application. Moreover, fencers would have to wear additional equipments that are designed for electric scoring machines. A fencer would have to wear a lamé, (metallic vest), a body cord, and have an electric weapon. (The basic equipment comes with a non-electric weapon).

How can I join?
Come to our meetings! We are happy that once our school goes to traditional schedule, more students can join the fencing club without having to come to school when they are off track. Most of our members are A-Track students, but everyone is welcomed to join. We encourage it! We meet every Wednesdays and Fridays afterschool from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. We also meet once or twice during our vacation.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope everyone's stomach is filled with turkey and other good food when we come back to school on Monday. Just so you know, there will be no fencing this Friday because we have no school. It's pretty obvious, but just so EVERYONE knows. I am grateful this Thanksgiving for our soon to arrive fencing equipments that school will provide. I am going to pre-order what we want, and the transaction will soon take place. Also, our club has gotten an invitation to an open fencing tournament at James Monroe High School on December 9th (Sunday). We will see how many of you guys are interested at today's meeting. We will start fundraising to purchase our fencing patches. Rendered design will be shown at today's meeting. That's about it.

Hey, the indidvidual foil tournament is coming up this Saturday, October 13. The location will be at Chaminade High School in West Hills. This is the school's address: 7500 Chaminade Ave. West Hills, CA 91304. I will arrange transportation so don't worry about that. I encourage you to bring $20 each just so you can buy drinks, food, and snacks when you get thirsty from fencing or get hungry after the competition. On Wednesday, you will have the opportunity to vote whether we should meet three days each week for fencing from afterschool to 4:30 or meet two days a week from afterschool to 5:00, the decision is yours. Also, we can see if everyone chips in a little, we will bring a cooler with some sandwiches and gatorade. I will also hand out the 2008 fencing schedule from the scholastic fencing league.

Hey guys, this is outrageous! I tried so hard asking you guys to show up for fencing, and half of you couldn't even do that. I am furious because we have a fencing tournament coming up and nobody is competing! This is unbelievable! I told you guys months in advance over this tournament. It is truly embarrassing to ourselves, the school, and all the other clubs who will mock us. What - you wear shoes that cost $100.00 your wear a shirt that cost $50.00 your underwear at least cost $10.00, and you can't afford it? It is very hard to believe you guys can't afford it. Sounds like an excuse to me, but whatever.
I WANT ALL OF YOU GUYS AT SCHOOL ON SUNDAY supporting your fencing club. I will be there, but I cannot compete. Apparently, I am over-qualified. You guys will have the benefit of getting electrical equipments temporarily loaned from other schools who will bring spare lames, body cord, weapon, etc. I will bring my electric set. You will not give me any excuses, you will help me make signs, and distribute all ads. to teachers ALL before Sunday. So get your act together! The tournament starts from 10:00 AM and will end by 1:00 PM; however, you may leave around 12:00PM because foil will probably end the earliest.

Buying your electrical equipments and membership

Hey guys, I apologize for posting our blog so late when there is so much information you should know about. The first thing I want to address is the upcoming Novice Tournament on September 23, 2007 (Sunday) from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM. To compete, you must buy your electric equipments. That includes a complete (electric) foil, electric lame (metallic vest, and a body cord. You can get this set from the fencing post at a bargained price for $95.00. The original value is $146.00! I got a VERY good discount from the fencing post. Check out www.thefencingpost.com . Then I need the fencers who are going to compete to fill out the individual membership to the USFA. The one-year membership is $50 which is non-negotiable. Sorry! Please, you must be a member of the USFA in order to compete. If you are NOT able to pay this because of financial hardship from home, we can make a half-half deal! I will pay $25.00 of your membership so you would have less burden to pay the full price. All you need is $25.00 for membership.
Next, please ask ALL of your teachers to come and support our game on the 23rd. We need the most support since we are a new baby sport that will soon boom! PLEASE ASK YOUR TEACHERS TO GIVE EXTRA CREDIT TO ALL OF THEIR STUDENTS IF THEY ATTEND OUR GAME. If they say yes, that's great; students will have even a greater incentive to show up. If they say no, say "thank you for your time" and carry on.
Also, I want you guys to check out http://www.schsfence.org/ to see what other schools we can compete in. Hollywood High is number on the list. Please know all Individual Events cost $5 each, per person, per event, so we should have five dollars ready before we get to compete.

I am short on basic fencing uniforms, but hopefully some students who took it last semester will bring it in, and I can issue each one out to DEDICATED and MOTIVATED fencers. The Surprised Pep Rally

Information you need to know about

Hey guys, I will be brief in posting information. It's 2:25 in the morning, and I am worn out. All fencers must #1 sign their liability waiver form, #2 bring in $20.00 membership to our fencing club.

For fencers competing on September 23, you must do the following.

Get a 2007-2008 membership application to the USFA. The cost is $50.00. Visit www.usfencing.org
Get electric fencing equipments from the Fencing Post. That includes a Lame [pronounced: lamay], electric sword, and a body cord. The cost will be around $100.00 Visit www.thefencingpost.com (Ask for Greg, and say you fence at Hollywood High School and ask for a discount.)

For the fencers who will participate in the upcoming pep rally, you must:
Come to an extra practice on Monday, Sept. 10. We will start right afterschool till 5:30 PM. Wear comfortable clothes. We will first work-out so we our muscles don't become sore.

Fencing update

Okay, I hope everyone in our club checks this blog frequently.
Number one, please remember that on July 28th, there is a SoCal Scholasting Fencing meeting. We as a club must attend (dressing business attire) and try to recruit a sponsor/coach.
Number two, contact list will be distributed online no later than June 29th.
Number three, show up tomorrow after school so we can relocate our fencing equipments to the rifle range.
Numbe four, I have personally delivered Ms. Raleigh the recruitment letter at John Burroughs Middle School. She is on vacation so I won't know when she will get back to me.

P.S. Don't be discouraged. I encourage you to hone your fencing skills. And please be fully committed to our club or we can not function properly as a team. Think of fencing as one of your hobbies, not as a school subject. It will be much more fun that way.

Let the fencing practices begin!

For those who attended the meeting today, you are in for a treat. Consider yourself as participants in the reality game/show, Survivor or maybe even American Idol. Twenty of you came to the meeting, and only ten of you will be loaned fencing equipments in MAY (Of course you are welcome to attend the practices and be part of the club.) Every Monday and Wednesdays, you will come up to the basketball court to work out and learn the basics of fencing. Bring your student contract (if you got one) on Monday and I will keep them and place a stamp for every time you participate in the practices afterschool. Those who accumulate the most stamps will get equipments loaned to them without paying any fees. So I encourage each and one of you to do your best and dedicate yourself. Good Luck!

A Message to Track C students wanting to join the club

This is a message for those who would like to join our fencing club who are on C-track. I have recently been notified that there are those who would wish to join Hollywood Sheik Fencing club who are in C-track. You are more than welcome to join; however, the majority of the members are A-track students so we will not meet till the first week of March. Meetings take place on Fridays in Mr. Alpert's room (rm. 125) during lunch. If our club is granted the scholarships from the United States Fencing Association, we will definitely start purchasing fencing equipments. Announcements will be made in February, let's pray for the best.

Advance
Taking a step towards one's opponent.

Attack
Movement or series of movements by which a fencer tries to score a point. In foil and saber, the fencer who attacks first acquires the "right-of-way." In order to execute a attack properly (i.e. one that the referee will acknowledge), the fencer's hand must be clearly extending towards their opponent's valid target in a threatening manner.

Beat
Sharp tap on the opponent's blade to initiate an attack or provoke a reaction.

Disengage
Evasive action in which the fencer avoids the opponent's attempt to take their blade.

Engagement
Contact between the fencers' blades - often as the prelude to an attack.

En Garde
Position taken before fencing commences.

Feint
A false attack intended to get a defensive reaction from the opposing fencer, thus creating the opportunity for a genuine attack ("feint-disengage attack")

Fleche
Explosive, running attack (Foil and Epee only)

Flunge
Action unique to saber - a combination of a lunge and a fleche. Evolved recently after the FIE modified saber rules in 1992 to prohibit running attacks.

Guard
Part of the weapon between the blade and handle; protects the hand (also: "bell-guard")

Parry, Counter-Parry
Defensive action in which a fencer blocks his opponent's blade.

Lunge
Most common attacking technique, in which the fencer launches themselves at their opponent by pushing off from their back leg (which generally remains stationary).

Opposition
"Thrust with Opposition" - To simultaneously deflect the opponent's point with one's guard while making an attack of one's own. Commonly used in epee to avoid a double touch.

Piste
French term for the fencing strip.

Point-in-Line
Action in which the fencer, who is generally out of attacking range, points their weapon at their opponent with their arm fully extended. A fencer who establishes a point in line has right of way, and their opponent cannot attack until they remove the blade from line by executing a beat.

Recover
The return to the en guarde position after lunging.

Remise
Attacking again immediately after the opponent's parry of an initial attack.

Riposte
Defender's offensive action immediately after parrying their opponent's attack.

Second Intention
A tactic in which a fencer executes a convincing, yet false, action in hopes of drawing a true, committed reaction from their opponent.

Stop Hit, Stop Cut(saber)
A counter-action made at the moment of an opponent's hesitation, feint, or poorly executed attack. To be awarded the point, the fencer attempting a stop hit must clearly catch their opponent's tempo. Hence, if their Stop Hit is not "in time," the referee may award the touch to their attacker.

Fencing 101

This is the target area for the weapon of foil.

A foil is a type of weapon used in fencing, and it looks like this.

Also in foil fencing there is something called a right-of-way. The fencer who has right-of-way will always get the touch. The person who begins the attack first has the right of way. If the fencer hesitates, or the fencer's blade is beat, the fencer will lose right of way to the opponent. Point in line (extending the blade straight out) will take right of way over any action after it except for a beat (hitting the blade purposefully to show control). If an attack is parried, then the fencer who parried it has the right of way to attack. The rules of right of way listed above basically say that the fencer who is in control of the situation gets the touch. In case where both fencers hit their opponent, the fencer with right of way will get the touch.

Welcome to Hollywood Sheik Fencing. All the updates for our club will be posted here. First things first, the sponsor of our club is Mr. Alpert. Our club meets every Fridays at Lunch in room 125. All members are in A-trk; however, we will occasionally meet during this winter vacation.
